Bread, Figs & Vision – Christian’s Journey Back to the Roots

Bread, Figs & Vision – Christian’s Journey Back to the Roots

When most people think of Peru, they picture Machu Picchu, llamas or ceviche. But amidst all this color and culture, there’s someone who prefers to experiment with ancient grains, dry figs, and mill flour with a hand mill from Austria: Christian Vera, a creative mind and passionate food artisan – with heart, humor, and a love for good bread.

From Lima via Berlin to the Siguas Valley

Christian was born and raised in Lima. After studying communication science, he could have easily pursued a media career – but curiosity had other plans: What makes good food truly good? Why does bread taste different in Austria than in Peru?

His journey took him from Berlin and the Biofach fair to a fig farm in southern Peru. In the Siguas Valley, where the climate is dry and the sun reliable, Christian cultivates ancient fig trees and mediterranean wheat varieties adapted to the local conditions.

Bread – More Than a Staple

To Christian, bread is not just food – it’s a form of cultural memory. On his farm, he produces whole grain bread made from sprouted, sun-dried wheat – with the help of a MH6 hand mill from Salzburger Grain Mills. (Fun fact: this mill has traveled just as much as Christian – even flying in hand luggage to South America!)

Sprouted wheat is richer in vitamins and easier to digest. And when Christian transforms it into his signature fig bread – the “Sapiens Bread” – it’s not just nourishing, it’s almost philosophical.

The MH6 in the Heart of a Fig Grove

On his farm, everything is milled by hand – no electricity, no overheating, just a good feeling for the grain. The MH6 works just as well in humid Lima as in the dry heat of Arequipa. As Christian winks: only if you tighten the wing nut properly!

Between Figs, Research and Facebook

Despite his rural lifestyle, Christian is well-connected. He visits events across Europe, interviews bakers and farmers, and documents forgotten wheat varieties like Laufener Landweizen. His mission: to inspire people to value healthy, regional, and handmade food – in Peru and beyond.

Looking Ahead

What began as a personal journey has become a story full of taste, culture, and passion. Christian proves that good bread builds bridges – between continents, people, and generations. We’re proud to have him as part of our mill family.

🍞 Welcome to Christian’s world – where the bread smells warm, the figs are sweet, and life slows down.
